We woke up at dawn and took the dogs for a walk. All three of them have to be on leashes now because they have been running off. Molly and Cookie have decided that they want to go swimming in the debris and sewage filled sea. Then they come “home” disgusting and we have to use precious water to clean them. And Lada the other night, also decided to take herself for a walk through the mud chasing after foxes. Oy!
After a quick cup of coffee we put on our rubber boots and headed down to the house for more sifting, schlepping, rinsing, and hanging. This system seems to be working to salvage clothes, linens, etc. Yesterday I rented a place in Argalasti and started washing clothes. I also got to take a shower and use a toilet that flushed—amazing. Truthfully have always been so grateful for the miracle of clean tap water, because I know so many people in the world struggle with access to clean water everyday.
Yesterday driving through Milina wasn’t so easy because they are clearing cars, trees, debris, etc.. I ended-up having to drive up through Lafkos. As I drove up the mountain there is a 200 yard river bed where olive groves used to be. The landscape has been completely altered. This one of the placess where the torrent of water came from that destroyed the picturesque town of Milina. More pictures later.
The good news is that we are developing a system for living, salvaging, cleaning, and rebuilding. Also, my job said they really want me to continue teaching for them and to take as much time as I need—there will be a job waiting for me when I am ready.
