For the walls - what about "ragging the walls"? A very light background color first ( white, with a touch of pigment) with a "ragged" hint of color using that same pigment. That's what I did in my house 25 years ago and have never tired of it. Sponging seems too obvious. Ragging is subtle. Best wishes.
